Zuckerberg: Flatter is faster, smaller is better: Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg as company cuts 10,000 more jobs

Meta will focus on restructuring the organization as well as canceling lower priority projects and reducing hiring, CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in a blog post on Tuesday.

The move came after the company said it would cut its workforce by another 10,000 employees following a cut announced last November. The company previously announced that it would lay off 11,000 employees, representing 13% of its workforce.

“We expect to announce restructuring and layoffs in our technical groups at the end of April and then in our business groups at the end of May,” Zuckerberg said in his post. “Overall, we expect to reduce our team size by about 10,000 people and close about 5,000 additional open positions that we have not yet hired,” he added.

Zuckerberg said the changes are expected to come within the next two months.

Flat is faster, smaller is better

Last year, in another blog post, Zuckerberg called 2023 the year of efficiency. Based on this, he said that the company plans to remove several layers of management.

“In the Year of Efficiency, we will flatten our organization by removing several levels of management. As part of this, we will be asking many managers to become individual contributors. We will also have reports from individual contributors at almost every level, not just the bottom one, so the flow of information between the people doing the work and management will be faster,” Zuckerberg said in his post.

The Facebook founder added that after last year’s downsizing, things moved faster at Meta, and that, looking back, he “underestimated the indirect costs of lower priority projects,” implying that Meta’s lower priority projects would be shut down.

“A leaner organization will meet its highest priorities faster. People will work more productively, and their work will bring more pleasure and satisfaction. We will become an even greater magnet for the most talented people. That’s why in our Year of Efficiency, we’re focused on canceling projects that are duplicate or of lower priority and making each organization as cost effective as possible,” he added.
