Memphis Depay and Daly Blind scored in the first half and Denzel Dumfries added a late goal as the Netherlands knocked the United States out of the World Cup with a 3-1 win on Saturday that took the Dutch to the quarter-finals.
Second-half substitute Hadji Wright of the USA pulled one back to make it 2–1 in the 76th minute. A cross from Christian Pulisic hit Wright’s leg and hit the net through goalkeeper Andris Noppert. But Dumfries, who assisted in the first two goals, scored from the summer in the 81st minute.
With runners-up in 1974, 1978 and 2010, the Oranges extended their unbeaten streak to 19 games at the World Cup. Next Friday they will face either Argentina or Australia at Lusail Stadium for this year’s final.
Now the Dutch have a few days to rest before the quarter-final match. While the US, which will co-host the next tournament in 2026, will have to reflect on the lesson taught to them at the Khalifa International Stadium.
