The Foreign Technology Act gives the United States the right to “prosecute anyone”, whether “American or not”
A bill currently in the US Senate to regulate technology linked to foreign adversaries is bipartisan, but it may not just “target big tech,” says Sky News host Amanda Stoker.
Ms Stocker’s comments come as governments move to ban the social media app TikTok because of its ties to the Chinese government.
“The bill gives the government the power to prosecute anyone, American or not, any company, any application, and any technology, hardware or software that they deem at any time to pose a security risk.
“Of course, this bill makes it possible to deal with TikTok, but it can also be used to access anything from a home computer or personal phone, directly to a server, satellite, mobile network or Wi-Fi network.”
