Six killed in Nigerian train colliding with passenger bus

Six people were killed and dozens were injured when a train collided with a passenger bus. Lagos, Nigeriaon Thursday, the emergency response agency said.

The bus was carrying government employees to work when it collided with an intra-city train in the Ikeja district of Lagos, said Ibrahim Farinloy, head of Nigeria’s National Emergency Management Agency in the state.

“So far, 84 people have been rescued alive and taken to the hospital… (and) the total death toll so far is six people, including those who died in the hospital,” Farinloy said. According to him, all the victims were from the bus, no one was injured on the train.

The bus driver involved in Thursday’s crash disobeyed traffic lights, said Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolou, secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency. The immediate cause of the incident was the reckless driving of a bus driver when he was trying to bypass a train’s traffic light before the train hit him, according to Oke-Osanintolu.

Lagos Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu said he was deeply saddened by the news and called for blood donations. “Let’s say a prayer for families and a prayer for mercy and the protection of our state,” he tweeted.
