Raiders owner Mark Davis on Josh McDaniels’ status amid struggle: ‘Rome wasn’t built in a day’

Las Vegas Raiders it was not expected to be 2-7 in the middle of the season, and hopes for the playoffs are dwindling every week. Usually in such a season, fingers begin to show, and usually in the direction of the coaching staff.

But Raiders owner Mark Davis dismissed any suspicion that his head coach, Josh McDaniels, would be fired.

“People in today’s world want instant gratification,” Davis said via ESPN after Indianapolis Colts defeated his raiders on Sunday in Las Vegas. “This guy has coached nine games. The score was 2:7, not the result we expected, but at the same time we lost with the ball six times with one point and had a chance to win at the end. .

“Rome wasn’t built overnight.”

Las Vegas was a playoff team last season thanks to solid quarterback play. Derek Carr and intrusive defense.

But the team’s stats for 2022 tell a different story about these raiders. On defense, they are 28th in scoring, trailing an average of 25.1 per game, and they are 371.9 yards per game behind under new defensive coordinator Patrick Graham.

Offensively, the Raiders weren’t all that bad, averaging 335.1 yards per contest (17th in the NFL). They also average 22.6 points per game (14th).

However, many of those points came in the first half when the Raiders squandered the lead at the end. The Raiders are 21st in the NFL. in the second half with 10.4 points per game. In the last three meetings, they scored an average of only 4.3 points after the break.

One such game was a 24-0 breakout against the New Orleans Saints on the road. Then, after leading the Jacksonville Jaguars 20–10 in the half, the Raiders went blank in the second half and the Jaguars came back to win 27–20.

Las Vegas have lost four of their last five games since losing 25-20 to the Colts on Sunday.

It doesn’t help McDaniels that he’s also had to deal with brutal injuries, especially tight end Darren Waller and wide receiver Hunter Renfroe, who are both on injured reserve.

But McDaniels’ commitment doesn’t seem to waver from Davis.

“I showed my confidence in him when I signed him to coach the Raiders. That’s when I gave it to him,” David said.

“We’re building,” McDaniels added on Monday via ESPN. “I never used the word “recovery” or anything like that. It’s the National Football League, it’s not five years away.”

McDaniels added that Davis did not provide him with job security.

“I’m going to control what I can control and do my best in my work. And part of that is to keep thinking about the future, next year and what’s going to happen here after the next few months,” McDaniels said.
