Polish court sentences man to life imprisonment for fatally stabbing Gdansk mayor

The man who fatally stabbed Gdansk Mayor Pawel Adamowicz in 2019 has been sentenced to life in prison. Polish court on Thursday.

Stefan Wilmont stabbed 53-year-old Adamovich to death on stage during a charity event on January 2. On November 13, 2019, Adamovich died of his wounds the next day, despite blood transfusions and other attempts by doctors to save him. The assassination shocked the Poles and plunged the nation into grief.

Judge Alexandra Kaczmarek said in her ruling that Wilmont committed “unprecedented murderin the history of Poland, but did not call it a political crime, despite Wilmont’s criticism of the party to which Adamovich belonged and which is now in opposition.

Kachmar stressed that Wilmont’s crime was “horrifying” as he planned it for the public to see and later showed no remorse during his trial.

The verdict came after a three-year investigation and a year-long trial, and was in line with the prosecution’s motion. Lawyers for Wilmont said they would appeal the verdict.

POLAND AND SLOVAKIA ANNOUNCED TO DELIVERY FIGHTERS TO UKRAINE

Adamovich’s brother, MP Piotr Adamovich, said the verdict closed one stage in the case, but that an appeals court could be expected later this year.

“No one can bring my brother back to life,” Adamovich said.

The situation is not easy for the family, who endured a “huge tragedy in 2019”, which returns to them in every court session.

The ruling conservative Law and Justice Party has faced accusations that the hostile atmosphere created against Adamovich and other social liberal politicians, propagated by the state media, has created fertile ground for violence against him.
