Police: 13-year-old brother accidentally shoots son of Miami-Dade Correctional Officer; neighbor speaks out – WSVN 7News | Miami News, Weather, Sports

NORTH EAST MIAMI-DADE, FL. (WSVN) – Investigators figured out what led to fatal murder of an 11-year-old boy in an apartment complex in northeast Miami-Dade: he was accidentally shot by his older brother.

Shemarion Behrs was in an apartment in the Horizons West complex with his four siblings, ages 9 to 15, Thursday afternoon, according to Miami-Dade Police. There were no adults at home.

Detectives said Burse’s 13-year-old brother pulled a gun from a firearms drawer in the master bedroom closet. While the older brother was handling the weapon, it fired and hit Bers in the chest.

Speaking to 7News on Friday, the kids’ neighbor said she heard.

“I heard a noise and then the kids were screaming ‘Help’,” said a neighbor who asked not to be named.

A neighbor who was at home with her little daughter said she immediately rushed to help.

“I called 911. I entered the house. The baby was there, blood everywhere,” she said.

The neighbor said she tried to revive Bers.

“I kept doing CPR, mouth to mouth, until he stopped breathing, and then I just stopped,” she said.

Paramedics airlifted the victim to the Ryder Trauma Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Speaking to reporters Thursday night, MDPD Detective Alvaro Zabaleta confirmed that Berce’s mother is a Miami-Dade Correctional Officer.

The children’s mother, Tiffany Callaway, described Behrs as “the light of our lives.” GoFundMe page what she created. She further writes: “I can tell you that he was an amazing boy. Loving, playful and always there to put a smile on your face when you need it.”

While loved ones mourn the loss, their neighbor said she was also going through a sudden tragedy.

“Blood on the wall, he was just laying there taking his last breath and it was just traumatic. I was nervous, I was in shock, but I was just trying to help, honestly, because I have a hidden weapon, I have children, so I know panic, fear, ”she said. “I’m connected to this moment. I just acted like he was part of my family.”

Miami-Dade Correctional Center spokesperson Juan Diasgranados released a statement saying, in part, “We are asking for family privacy at this time to respect the family’s needs and allow them to grieve in private.”

Bers’ mother created a GoFundMe page to help cover funeral expenses. She wrote: “As a mother, I beg you to help me bury my child. This is the last thing I can do for him and I hope you can all help.”

The police did not specify who is the owner of the weapon.

No charges are expected to be filed.
