Last season, Johnson returned to the club, where he made his debut on a two-year contract. There were doubts not only about his future with the Warriors, but also about his future in the game after a bad 2022.
But Johnson resurrected his career and was the main reason for the impressive start of the season for the Warriors.
However, he has yet to sign a new contract for 2024. News Corporation reports that there have been “discussions” between the Tigers over a one-year deal.
The Warriors are also reportedly considering offering him an extension.
News Corporation journalist Brent Reid told Triple M that Johnson “fits the bill” for what the Tigers are looking for after missing out on Mitchell Moses’ signature.
But he emphasized that interest arose even before Scott Fulton became head of recruitment.
“It’s pretty well documented that the Tigers are looking for an organizing midfielder who can lead them through the park and dominate the pitch,” he said.
“I must emphasize that this happened before Scott Fulton arrived at the club, so I’m not sure what Scott’s plans are for Sean Johnson – the contact happened before Scott Fulton arrived at the club.
“Scott may have other ideas, he may have other goals – I know he’s a Ben Hunt fan – so that could change.
“But there was an approach to Shawn Johnson, there is interest from the Tigers in him, so the Warriors had a little fight – which I don’t think they expected.”
The Tigers’ interest in Johnson could create problems for Luke Brooks, who doesn’t have a 2024 contract.
Brooks had his best game of the season last week, taking the Tigers out of a game against the Panthers, but now he needs to get back into shape consistently.
Adam Duehi re-signed with the club on a one-year deal but is expected to miss half of next season with a third ACL injury.
