Kenyan president criticizes Supreme Court ruling allowing activist to register LGBT organization

Kenyan President William Ruto criticized a recent Supreme Court decision that allows an activist to register an LGBTQ rights organization, reiterating on Thursday that the country’s stance on same-sex marriage remains unchanged.

The National Council, which oversees non-governmental organizations, rejected the activist’s request for registration. The High Court of Kenya and the Court of Appeal said the board acted improperly. 24, city Supreme Court agreed, rejecting a further appeal by the board.

Ruto said the government respects the Supreme Court’s 3-2 decision, but “our culture and religion don’t allow same-sex marriage.”

“Our country Kenya cannot allow same-sex marriage… It will happen in other countries, but not in Kenya,” he added.
