Israeli forces kill three Palestinian militants in West Bank shootout

Three Palestinian militants were killed after opening fire on Israeli troops Near the West Bank city of Nablus on Sunday, according to the Israel Defense Forces.

Another armed militant surrendered Israeli troops and was handed over to security officials for questioning, the IDF said. After the shooting, three M-16 rifles, a pistol and ammunition were seized.

According to the Associated Press, the Palestinian militants were members of the Al-Aqsa Martyrs’ Brigade, a militant group linked to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas’s Fatah Party.

Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin traveled to Israel this week to meet Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu amid rising tensions.

“Secretary Austin expressed his condolences to the Prime Minister for the recent victims of terrorism and reaffirmed his commitment to Israel’s right to defend itself against such attacks,” the Pentagon said Friday.

“The Secretary stressed the importance of honoring the commitments made by Israeli and Palestinian senior officials in Aqaba, Jordan on February 26, and called for immediate steps to de-escalate violence and work towards a just and lasting peace.”

Austin was referring to the meeting of Jordanian, Egyptian, US, Israeli and Palestinian officials in Aqaba, Jordan. Representatives of these five groups issued a joint statement after the February events. At the 26th meeting, they stated that they “confirmed the need for de-escalation on the ground.”
