Israeli army destroys home of Palestinian involved in Jerusalem attack

The Israeli army said on Thursday it had destroyed the home of a Palestinian involved in a terrorist operation in the West Bank. Twin bombings in Jerusalem that killed two and injured at least 18 people in November.

Israeli authorities arrested Islam Farukh in December on suspicion of masterminding the bombings, part of a more than year-long spike violence in the West Bank and eastern Jerusalem.

The army released video footage showing troops blockading the area and carrying out small controlled explosions, destroying an apartment in the occupied West Bank city of Ramallah early Tuesday morning.

The army said people threw rocks and firebombs at the soldiers, who returned fire. The Palestinian Health Ministry said one Palestinian was moderately injured by Israeli shelling and was being treated at a local hospital.

Israel is tearing down attackers’ homes in an attempt to deter others, a tactic tantamount to collective punishment, critics say.

The November attack came after several months ruthless violence in the West Bankwhere the Israeli military conducts raids almost every night in response to Palestinian attacks on Israelis.

Israel captured the West Bank during the 1967 Middle East War, along with East Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip. The Palestinians are looking for territories for their long-awaited independent state.
