  • Cristiano Ronaldo, who is the most followed person on the platform, lost about three million followers during the crash.
  • This may have been due to the blocking of millions of accounts, but the cause of the problem is unclear.

The most followed person on Instagram appears to have lost three million users during a four-hour outage to the social media platform on Monday.

Cristiano Ronaldo, the Portuguese footballer, temporarily lost a large number of followers shortly after the social media platform went down around 9am ET, but has since regained all of his fans.

While the cause of the accident remains unclear, several users reported that their accounts were suspended because they “did not follow the community guidelines”.

Others have also lost followers, which may have been due to millions of accounts being suspended, resulting in the deletion of follower counters.

MailOnline contacted Instagram owner Meta for more comments on the cause of the problem, though he acknowledged it on Twitter.

Just after 10:00 AM ET, Instagram tweeted: “We are aware that some of you are having trouble accessing your Instagram account. We are looking into this and apologize for the inconvenience.”

MailOnline tried to access the application and found no problems.

But the affected users received a message from Instagram saying “We have suspended your account on October 31, 2022.”

There are 30 days left to disagree with this decision. Your account does not comply with our Community Guidelines.”

Those who clicked to appeal their suspension then saw a mysterious black screen with a loading circle.

“Can anyone explain?”: MailOnline contacted Meta, the company that owns Instagram, for comment. Many users took to Twitter to discuss the issues they were facing.

Other users have reported losing followers, possibly due to blocking other users on the platform.

One user wrote: “Ok, my account got suspended for no reason, I couldn’t appeal it and now my account is gone. & I’m not alone.’

Another added, “My IG account was banned just NOW! So many tweets that their account got banned too! HELP US INSTAGRAM!”

And one joked: “Everyone checks Twitter when WhatsApp, Instagram or Facebook is down.”

Another user from West Virginia, USA said: “Has anyone else just blocked Instagram for no reason? And now Instagram won’t even bother giving you an appeal, it’ll just give you an error?”

Meanwhile, a user from Melbourne, Australia said, “Does anyone else have Instagram randomly crashing after 30 seconds of using the app?”

Instagram is one of several platforms owned by Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta, along with WhatsApp and Facebook.

Just last week whatsapp there was a two-hour outage due to which users around the world could not send or receive messages.

BEST WhatsApp ALTERNATIVES

If you are considering uninstalling WhatsApp, you will be pleased to know that there are several alternative apps to choose from:

1. Telegram

With over 400 million users, Telegram is one of the most popular WhatsApp alternatives.

Although it is very similar to WhatsApp, what sets it apart is the fact that it gives you the ability to set messages to self-destruct after a certain period of time without leaving a trace.

Telegram also offers end-to-end encryption.

However, as a WhatsApp spokesperson noted, Telegram “doesn’t offer end-to-end encryption by default, so it’s not necessarily more secure than WhatsApp.”

2. Signal

Signal is one of the most secure messaging apps due to the fact that it is open source.

This means that the app’s code is publicly viewable, making it nearly impossible for app creators to sneak into any loopholes that could allow governments or hackers to spy on your communications.

3. Messages

If you’re using an iPhone, you can simply switch to iMessage, Apple’s own messaging app.

The app has a number of impressive features including no character limit, the ability to send images and videos, and of course Apple’s animated emoji feature, Animoji.

Unfortunately, iMessage is only available for iPhone users, so it will be difficult for you to interact with anyone using Android.

4. Google Messages

Google’s answer to iMessage is Google Messages, an Android-only messaging service.

The app replaces your stock SMS app and integrates with all Google apps and services, making it easy to share images or use the Google Assistant.

5. Facebook messenger

If you’ve put off using WhatsApp due to sharing data with Facebook, Facebook Messenger might not be the best option for you.

However, the app offers a number of useful features, including games, secret conversations, and video calls.
