Give Some Love: Boy Finds Support at Ronald McDonald House

CAMDEN, NJ (CBS) — Thursday, CBS3 will present the 13th annual Ronald McDonald Charity Telethon.. CBS3 is calling it “Give Some Love” and will be raising money to help four Ronald McDonald homes in our area.

Families from all over the world seek first-class medical care, and although they are far from home, they are quickly becoming part of the community at the Ronald McDonald House.

For example, 13-year-old Jorge Farro found many friends at a charity.

“I play wheelchair basketball, I play track hockey, I race in wheelchairs,” he said.

Farro lives with arthrogryposis. The condition affects the range of motion in his joints, but he doesn’t let it slow him down.

“Before, I wasn’t as sure of myself as I am now,” he said.

Farro is from Peru and has been coming to the Ronald McDonald House in Southern New Jersey since he was about 9 months old.

“I really met a lot of people here,” he said. “And I keep in touch with them before they leave. It makes me feel very grateful because I usually get in a lot of pain, but when I’m with my friends I don’t have any pain at all.”

“Sometimes he asks: “When is my next operation?” Because he wants to stay here for a few weeks,” said Fatima Vega, Farro’s mother.

She says their stay at Ronald McDonald’s house has shown them that they are not alone.

“It was amazing because a lot of people just had surgeries and stuff like that. But just finding a place where you could feel at ease and you had a rooftop where you could feel safe was a lot. And the people here are always very nice, and you feel comfortable with them, ”said Vega.

The Ronald McDonald House is truly a home away from home for many families.

Give some love children in need by supporting the CBS3 Telethon Thursday from 6:00 am to 8:00 pm on CBS 3 and CBS News Philadelphia.
