Gavin Williamson, a senior official in Prime Minister Sunak’s office, has resigned amid allegations of bullying.

A senior member of Prime Minister Rishi Sunaka’s government announced his resignation Tuesday night after mounting accusations of bullying colleagues.

Gavin Williamson, in a letter, announced his resignation as Minister of State without portfolio. posted on twitterfour days after the London Times published swearing text messages he had sent to another MP.

Following this, a senior civil servant alleged that Williamson subjected them to constant harassment, telling the man to “slit his own throat” on one occasion and “jump out of a window” on another.

In his resignation letter, Williamson said he apologized for the text messages and cooperated with an investigation into the conduct. But he dismissed suggestions that the second incident was related to bullying.

“I refute the characterization of these allegations, but I acknowledge that they divert attention from the good work that the government is doing for british people“I have therefore decided to step away from government so that I can fully comply with the current complaints process and clear my name of any wrongdoing.”

Williamson’s resignation came amid criticism from Sunak for not delivering on his promise to make integrity a central focus of his government. Opposition leaders also called for the resignation of Interior Minister Suella Braverman, who Sunak reappointed just six days after she resigned for violating ministerial conduct rules.

Sunak took office two weeks ago after his predecessor, Liz Truss, was forced to step down after her budget proposals caused economic turmoil. Truss was prime minister for just six weeks after taking over from Boris Johnson, who resigned after a series of scandals ranging from illegal partying during the pandemic to allegations of misuse of political donations.

Many observers were surprised when Sunak appointed Williamson to his government because he had been ousted twice from previous cabinet posts. Williamson stepped down as secretary of defense in 2019 after leaking confidential information from the National Security Council. He lost his job as education minister in 2021 after standard exams were disrupted. because of the pandemic.

Sunak thanked Williamson for his “unwavering support” as he accepted the resignation.

“I support your decision to step back and understand why you did it,” the prime minister wrote in a letter to Williamson.
