Facebook and Instagram used “aggressive tactics” against children, the lawsuit says.

A Meta software engineer said it was “not a secret” how Facebook and Instagram used meticulous algorithms to encourage repetitive and compulsive use among minors, whether or not the content was harmful, and “didn’t apologize for it.”
The redacted exposés were exposed in a lawsuit against Meta but were printed out and obtained by DailyMail.com.

The document states that 20 percent of Facebook and Instagram users aged 9 to 13 have had sexual experiences with adults on those sites.
This is despite Meta’s “zero tolerance policy” which prohibits abuses such as child exploitation.
DailyMail.com has received an unedited version of a lawsuit against Meta filed by parents who claim children have been harmed at the hands of their platforms.
DailyMail.com contacted Meta, who declined to comment on specific issues.
A spokesperson for the main plaintiffs’ court-appointed attorney told DailyMail.com: “These previously unreleased documents show that social media companies are treating the youth mental health crisis as a public relations issue rather than a public relations emergency. its products.
“This includes burying internal research documenting this harm, blocking safety measures because they reduce ‘engagement’, and cutting off funding for youth mental health teams.”
The lawsuit, filed in California on Feb. 14, says that more than a third of children ages 13 to 17 report using one of the defendants’ apps “almost all the time” and admit it is “too much,” the parents involved in the lawsuit allege.
The complaints, later consolidated into several class-action lawsuits, alleged that Meta’s social media platforms were designed to be dangerously addictive, causing children and teens to consume content that increases the risk of sleep disturbances, eating disorders, depression and suicide.
The case also states that teenagers and children are more vulnerable to the adverse effects of social media.
An unedited version was released on March 10.
It states that Thorn, an international anti-trafficking organization, published a report in 2021 detailing the issues of sexual exploitation on Facebook and Instagram and “provided this information to Meta.”
Thorn’s report shows “Neither blocking nor reporting.” [offenders] protects minors from ongoing harassment,” and 55 percent of report participants who blocked or reported someone said they were re-contacted online.
And younger boys are especially at risk of predators.
The unsealed complaint also alleges that 80 percent of Facebook’s “adult/juvenile bonding violations” were related to the platform’s “People You May Know” feature.
. The files allege that the company was aware of child sexual exploitation on Facebook and Instagram and claims that “Meta’s engagement-based algorithm used extreme content to increase engagement.”
“An internal study conducted around June 2020 concluded that 500,000 underage Instagram accounts are ‘acquiring IIC’ on a daily basis, which stands for ‘inappropriate interaction with children,'” the redacted statement on pages 135 and 136 of the document reads. .
“However, at the time, Child Safety [was] explicitly invoked as a non-target. . . . So if we do something here, cool. But if we can’t do anything at all, that’s fine too.
Since then, Meta has improved its ability to reduce unwanted interactions between adults and young adults.
The firm has created technology to find accounts that exhibit potentially suspicious behavior and prevent those accounts from interacting with young people’s accounts.
And Meta claims not to show young people’s accounts to these adults when they view a list of people who liked a post, or when they view a list of followers or followers of an account.
However, these changes were made after 2020.
The complaint also states that Meta considered making teen user profiles “private by default” back in July 2020, but backtracked on the move after comparing “security, privacy and policy wins” to “growth impact” .
On page 135 of the lawsuit, the portion that was redacted alleges that Meta knew that allowing adults to contact children on Instagram would “enrage Apple to the point of threatening to remove us from the App Store”, the company had no deadline for “when we stop adults from messaging minors on IG Direct.”
“This has remained true even after Meta received reports that a 12-year-old minor was being harassed on their platform.” [the] daughter [an] Apple Security Exec,” the statement said.
However, in November 2022, Meta moved to make teen user accounts private by default.
A spokesperson for Meta told DailyMail.com: “The claim that we have withdrawn funding for work that supports people’s well-being is false.”
The redacted version of the complaint reads: “Instead of accepting [this] seriously” and “launching new tools” to protect children, the Meta did the opposite.
“By the end of 2019, the Meta’s mental health team had stopped doing anything,” “was deprived of funding,” and “completely stopped.” And as noted, the Meta allowed the security tools she knew were broken to be used as a fix.”
A spokesperson for Meta told DailyMail.com that because this is a top priority for the company, “we’ve actually increased funding, as evidenced by the more than 30 tools we offer to support teens and families.” Today, hundreds of employees are working in the company to create features for this purpose,” they said.
Other “shocking” information in an unsealed complaint reveals the existence of the Meta’s “rabbit hole project”.

“The meta acknowledges that Instagram users at risk of suicide or self-harm are more likely to “experience more dangerous suicide and self-harm content (via research, related suggestions, follower suggestions.”
The document mentions Molly Russell, a London teenager who committed suicide in 2017.
Meta conducted an internal study that warned that there was a risk of “Molly Russell-like incidents” because the product’s algorithmic features were “[l]leads users to unpleasant content, ”says on page 84 of the document.
“Our recommendation algorithms will start pushing you down the rabbit hole of more egregious content.”
“They were clear on the possible solutions: targeted changes to the algorithm do lead to a “significant reduction in impact” of problematic content.
“But they resisted making changes for the obvious, profit-driven reason that such tweaks “came with a clear participation cost.”
The lawsuit alleges that the Meta’s ongoing stance on the importance of child safety has never been serious, but simply “theatre”.
“Our data currently shown is incorrect. . . . We share bad performance with the outside world. . . we vouch for those numbers,” the employee said, as shown in the document.
