Diaz was taken to the unclean area and placed in a wheelchair, where he was wheeled into the clubhouse.

His brother Alexis, who is also on the team, cried on the pitch.

If Diaz has a serious injury, then the damage it does to the Mets is insurmountable.

Diaz was the best player in baseball last year, posting historic numbers. Last season, he posted a 1.31 ERA, by far the lowest of his career, hitting 17.1 batters in nine innings.

He finished ninth in the NL Cy Young Award voting.

Diaz became the dominant closer with Seattle Mariners and was traded to the Mets ahead of the 2019 season, but his first season had to be forgotten. His ERA was 5.59, he lost his job and seemed to be refusing a long pass all the time. But he had quite a twist.

He’s been back to normal since the start of the 2020 season with a 2.27 ERA and 257 batters in 150.1 innings.

The Mets re-signed Diaz to a five-year, $102 million contract during the off-season, the largest ever deal for a reliever.

His strike music for “Narco” by Blasterjaxx and Timmy Trumpet has also become something of a cult hit, and there is now debate as to whether it’s better than Mariano Rivera’s “Enter Sandman”.
