A dog has been seen running through mexico with a severed human hand in his mouth, which eventually led to the discovery of 53 bags of human remains buried in the ground.

The discovery was made in late October during the El Cervantino festival in Guanajuato, a violent Mexican state under the influence of drug cartels.

“While people from all over the world were celebrating the Cervantino festival, we were digging up the bodies, and at the same time I thought it was useless because they were burying more people in other places,” searcher Bibiana Mendoza told Agence French-Presse.

Mendoza is the organizer of a group to search for an unspecified number of missing people, including her brother, as the state deals with widespread cartel violence.

Guanajuato is considered the most violent state in Mexico. As of September this year, about 2,400 people have been killed, and another 3,000 people are missing.

A turf war between the Jalisco New Generation and Santa Rosa de Lima cartels resulted in much of the violence in the state. Guanajuato remains a tourist and industrial center.

Cartel bandits several people have been killed in restaurants and bars in recent months, including in Irapuato in October, when 12 people were killed.

And gunmen in Santa Rosa de Lima just a few weeks later gunmen killed nine people in a bar in Apaseo el Alto.

The Jalisco Cartel is led by Nemesio Oseguera, or “El Mencho”, a wanted international fugitive.

A dog with a severed human head was also seen. Zacatecas, Mexico, at the end of last month. The body parts left over from this incident were later found next to the drug cartel report. Zacatecas also suffers from violent crime fueled by drug cartels.
