tearful Borussia Dortmund Manager Edin Terzic said there would be “no happy ending” after his side tripped over the title in sight, giving Bayern Munich their 11th consecutive Bundesliga crown.

Dortmund led the table by two points going into the final round, but lost 2–2 to Mainz at home, allowing Bayern, who won 2–1 in Cologne, to move up to the top spot, winning the title on goal difference.

Terzic was spotted in front of the club’s famous yellow wall after the final whistle in tears as fans chanted the name of the Dortmund coach.

“You can see how hard and tough this sport that we have fallen in love with can be,” Terzic said, adding that “it hurts a lot – there won’t be a happy ending for us this year.”

Dortmund enlisted the unexpected support of Bayern captain Thomas Müller, who celebrated his side’s 11th consecutive title and his 12th Bundesliga title, to express sympathy.

“I’m not sorry for being champion and we’re happy about it, but if you think about others, I’m a little sorry.

“Even if they don’t want to or shouldn’t hear it. I’m not trying to present myself as generous or anything like that, but it’s difficult.”

Captain Mats Hummels, the only team member to have tasted championship glory with Dortmund, said: “The next days will be tough.

“It will be difficult to digest. It will take more than a few days.”

Borussia midfielder Emre Can said simply: “We did everything as a team, but it didn’t happen.”

“We wanted it, but in the end we didn’t get it.”

Borussia Dortmund have topped the table four times this season, but each time they have lost points and allowed Bayern to return to the top.
