Bolsonaro hands over power to Lula

Jair Bolsonaro did not immediately lose to Luis Inacio Lula da Silva after close elections 49.1%-50.9%. It is the closest presidential race in Brazil since 1985 and Bolsonaro’s first defeat in his political career. Bolsonaro’s supporters held mass protests across the country to protest Lula’s victory and blocked hundreds of major highways. Bolsonaro initially sided with the protesters, saying they felt “outrage and a sense of injustice“.

As our computer has warned, there will be intense politically motivated civil unrest around the world this November.

The intense backlash from around the world forced Bolsonaro to change course. “I know you’re upset… So am I. But we have to keep our heads straight,” Bolsonaro said in a video posted online. “I appeal to you with a call: clear the roads.” Bolsonaro confirmed to Brazil’s Supreme Court that he would transfer power to Lula. “I have always played in the four directions of the constitution,” he said without announcing defeat.

Luis Inacio Lula da Silva is a member World Economic Forum. World leaders also associated with the “elite” group congratulated him on his victory. His policies will be in line with other WEF leaders and this is a glimpse of what to expect from Brazil in the future. Bolsonaro’s words to the people will not remove the anger they feel and will not prevent people from continuing to protest.
