90-year-old turtle fathers three babies at Houston Zoo

Mr Pickles, a 90-year-old ray turtle, is the father of three hatchlings after a surprise egg laying at the Houston Zoo. According to a statement provided by Storyful, the herpetology curator came across Mrs. Pickles’ irradiated turtle, Mrs. Pickles’ companion, while she was laying her eggs during the closing. It’s unlikely the eggs would have hatched on their own if the keeper hadn’t been in the right place at the right time, the statement said, as “the soil in Houston is unsuitable for Madagascar’s native tortoises.” The statement said Mr. Pickles is the oldest animal at the Houston Zoo and the youngest father after three eggs hatched. Mr and Mrs Pickles have been together since she arrived in 1996, but the couple had only given birth to one “little Pickles” earlier in 1997, the zoo said. The footage shared with Storyful shows the new cubs, named Dill, Cucumber and Jalapeno, walking around in an enclosure at the zoo. The baby turtles will remain backstage until they are large enough to safely join their parents’ enclosure, according to the statement. Credit: Kevin Kendrick/Houston Zoo via Storyful
