TORRINGTON, Conn. (WFSB) – A man has been charged with misdriving on Highway 8 in the Torrington/Winstead area.
State police said the man was heading south on the northern lanes near exit 36.
The soldiers said they received several calls to the emergency services around 4:40 am on Wednesday.
The vehicle involved was described as a white SUV.
The soldiers found the car and were able to stop it safely at Exit 45 in Torrington.
While examining the driver, a 71-year-old man, the servicemen said they recognized him as disoriented. The driver explained that he was driving from Florida straight to Connecticut without getting enough sleep.
Soldiers fined the man for driving in the wrong direction on a restricted highway and contacted local family members to get him safely to his destination.
“Thank you to members of the public who immediately reported this dangerous situation,” the state police said. “The soldiers were able to intervene quickly and reduce further risk to motorists.”
