3 dead, shooter still at large



Three people were killed and two injured in a shooting at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, USA, when a former student opened fire.

University President James Ryan said the shooter remains at large and the facility is locked down while the search continues.

Authorities identified the suspect as Christopher Darnell Jones, Jr.; in blue jeans, red shoes and a burgundy jacket. He may be driving a black SUV.

The UVA Police Department said that several police departments, including the state police, are “actively looking for the suspect; the suspect is armed and dangerous.”

Witnesses on campus reported the shooting at 10:30 p.m. Sunday local time (5:30 a.m. South African Standard time on Monday).

Shots rang out in Culbreth’s garage, followed by a campus-wide alarm calling for those in the vicinity to seek shelter.

University police said they were looking for Christopher Darnell Jones Jr. in connection with the shooting.

Jones was reportedly a former UVA football player in 2018, his freshman year, but did not play in any games.

According to The newspaper “New York TimesRyan said classes would be canceled while they “work closely with victims’ families.”

“This is a message that any leader hopes never to be sent and I am devastated that this violence has visited the University of Virginia,” Ryan wrote in an email.

Shelter teams on site remain active, with UVA vice president and chief student affairs officer Robin Hadley saying the warnings are “frightening.”

Hadley Email address reads: “I am on the same footing as many of you; I am sheltering in place and in direct contact with university leadership and UPD.”

“If you are not inside and not safe, look for a safe place immediately,” Hadley added.

Jones opened fire near the School of Architecture on the northwest side of campus.
