1 person died, another was injured as a result of a dump truck collision with a house, both caught fire

WILLOUGHBY, Ohio. A Ward’s Lawn Care dump truck crashed into Willoughby’s home Saturday morning, according to the Willoughby Fire Department.

Eyewitness video showed the chaotic scene unfolding shortly before 11:00 am. Erica Sherman watched as it all unfolded. According to her, it looks like the dump truck driver lost control.

“There was a gentleman who was driving. He ended up running over the curb and pulled off the side of the road, back onto the road, and back onto the side of the road,” she described.

She said the truck only stopped when it crashed into a house on Vine Street.

Willoughby Fire Chief Todd Ungar said the truck hit electric and gas poles.

As a result of the accident, both the house and the dump truck caught fire.

Witnesses rushed to the truck to try to get the driver out of the car, not realizing that there was also a passenger in the car.

“I was able to film the Good Samaritans trying to get the young man out of the car. I think one of them set himself on fire while trying to get away from the man,” said witness James Guller.

Sherman was one of those who rushed over.

“Me and other people got out of the cars and ran,” she said. “The gentleman who ran to the scene took a brick and broke the window because we couldn’t open the driver’s door,” she said.

No one was home at the time of the accident. Bystanders helped the driver out of the truck and he was taken to Hillcrest Hospital, officials said.

But after firefighters got the blaze under control, they found someone in the passenger seat who hadn’t survived.
